Parallels
I have started noticing some
significant parallels between John the Baptist along with early
events in Jesus' ministry to similar things at the end of His
ministry that seem to have compelling resonance.
Then the people of Jerusalem and all Judea were
going out to him, and all the region along the Jordan,
and they were baptized by him in the river Jordan, confessing
their sins. (Matthew 3:5-6) |
Now among those who went up to worship at the festival were
some Greeks. They came to Philip, who was
from Bethsaida in Galilee, and said to him, "Sir, we
wish to see Jesus." (John 12:20-21) |
But when he saw many Pharisees and
Sadducees coming for baptism, he said to them, "You brood
of vipers! Who warned you to flee from the wrath to
come? Bear fruit worthy of repentance." (Matthew 3:7-8) |
All who exalt themselves will be humbled, and all who humble
themselves will be exalted. "But woe to you, scribes and
Pharisees, hypocrites! For you lock people
out of the kingdom of heaven. For you do not go in yourselves, and
when others are going in, you stop them....You snakes,
you brood of vipers! How can you escape being sentenced
to hell? (Matthew 23:12-13, 33) |
Bear fruit worthy of repentance.
(Matthew 3:8) |
So the Jews gathered around him and said to him, "How
long will you keep us in suspense? If you are the Messiah, tell us
plainly." Jesus answered, "I have told you, and you
do not believe. The works that I do in my Father's name
testify to me; but you do not believe,
because you do not belong to my sheep. My sheep hear my voice. I
know them, and they follow me. I give them eternal life, and they
will never perish. No one will snatch them out of my hand."
(John 10:24-28) Many came to him, and they were saying, "John performed no sign, but everything that John said about this man was true." And many believed in him there. (John 10:41-42) |
Do not presume to say to yourselves, 'We have Abraham
as our ancestor'; for I tell you, God is able from
these stones to raise up children to Abraham.
(Matthew 3:9) |
saying, "Blessed is the king who comes in the name of
the Lord! Peace in heaven, and glory in the highest heaven!"
Some of the Pharisees in the crowd said to him, "Teacher,
order your disciples to stop." He answered, "I tell you,
if these were silent, the stones would shout
out." (Luke 19:38-40) They answered him, "Abraham is our father." Jesus said to them, "If you were Abraham's children, you would be doing what Abraham did, but now you are trying to kill me, a man who has told you the truth that I heard from God. This is not what Abraham did. You are from your father the devil, and you choose to do your father's desires. He was a murderer from the beginning and does not stand in the truth, because there is no truth in him. When he lies, he speaks according to his own nature, for he is a liar and the father of lies. (John 8:39-40, 44) |
Even now the ax is lying at the root of the trees;
every tree therefore that does not bear good fruit is cut
down and thrown into the fire.
(Matthew 3:10) |
So he said to the gardener, 'See here! For three years I
have come looking for fruit on this fig tree,
and still I find none. Cut it down! Why
should it be wasting the soil?' He replied, 'Sir, let it alone for
one more year, until I dig around it and put manure on it. If it
bears fruit next year, well and good; but if not, you can cut
it down.' (Luke 13:7-9) Whoever does not abide in me is thrown away like a branch and withers; such branches are gathered, thrown into the fire, and burned. (John 15:6) When the disciples saw it, they were amazed, saying, "How did the fig tree wither at once?" (Matthew 21:20) In the morning as they passed by, they saw the fig tree withered away to its roots. Then Peter remembered and said to him, "Rabbi, look! The fig tree that you cursed has withered." Jesus answered them, "Have faith in God. (Mark 11:20-22) |
I baptize you with water for repentance,
but one who is more powerful than I is coming after me; I am not
worthy to carry his sandals. He will baptize you with the
Holy Spirit and fire. (Matthew 3:11) I have baptized you with water; but he will baptize you with the Holy Spirit. (Mark 1:8) John answered all of them by saying, "I baptize you with water; but one who is more powerful than I is coming; I am not worthy to untie the thong of his sandals. He will baptize you with the Holy Spirit and fire. (Luke 3:16) I myself did not know him, but the one who sent me to baptize with water said to me, 'He on whom you see the Spirit descend and remain is the one who baptizes with the Holy Spirit.' And I myself have seen and have testified that this is the Son of God. (John 1:33-34) |
Jesus answered, "Very truly,
I tell you, no one can enter the kingdom of God without being born
of water and Spirit." (John 3:5)
I have come to cast fire upon the earth;
and how I wish it were already kindled! (Luke 12:49 NAS95)When he had said this, he breathed on them and said to them, "Receive the Holy Spirit." (John 20:22) |
His winnowing fork is in his hand, and
he will clear his threshing floor and will
gather his wheat into the granary; but the chaff he will
burn with unquenchable fire.
(Matthew 3:12) His winnowing fork is in his hand, to clear his threshing floor and to gather the wheat into his granary; but the chaff he will burn with unquenchable fire. (Luke 3:17) |
Making a whip of cords,
he drove all of them out of the temple, both
the sheep and the cattle. He also poured out the coins of the
money changers and overturned their tables. He told those who were
selling the doves, "Take these things out of here! Stop
making my Father's house a marketplace!" His disciples
remembered that it was written, "Zeal for your
house will consume me." (John 2:15-17)
Then Jesus entered the temple and drove out
all who were selling and buying in the temple, and he overturned
the tables of the money changers and the seats of those who sold
doves. He said to them, "It is written, 'My house shall be
called a house of prayer'; but you are making it a den of
robbers." The blind and the lame came to him
in the temple, and he cured them. But when the chief priests and
the scribes saw the amazing things that he did, and heard the
children crying out in the temple, "Hosanna to the
Son of David," they became angry. (Matthew 21:12-15)He said to them, "I have eagerly desired to eat this Passover with you before I suffer; for I tell you, I will not eat it until it is fulfilled in the kingdom of God." (Luke 22:15-16) |
John would have prevented him, saying, "I need to be
baptized by you, and do you come to me?" But Jesus answered
him, "Let it be so now; for it is proper for us in this way
to fulfill all righteousness." Then he
consented. (Matthew 3:14-15) |
Do not think that I have come to abolish the law
or the prophets; I have come not to abolish but to fulfill.
(Matthew 5:17) See to it that no one takes you captive through philosophy and empty deceit, according to human tradition, according to the elemental spirits of the universe, and not according to Christ. For in him the whole fullness of deity dwells bodily, and you have come to fullness in him, who is the head of every ruler and authority. (Colossians 2:8-10) Do you think that I cannot appeal to my Father, and he will at once send me more than twelve legions of angels? But how then would the scriptures be fulfilled, which say it must happen in this way? (Matthew 26:53-54) |
And when Jesus had been baptized, just
as he came up from the water, suddenly the heavens were opened to
him and he saw the Spirit of God descending like a dove and
alighting on him. And a voice from heaven
said, "This is my Son, the Beloved, with whom I am well
pleased." (Matthew 3:16-17) And just as he was coming up out of the water, he saw the heavens torn apart and the Spirit descending like a dove on him. And a voice came from heaven, "You are my Son, the Beloved; with you I am well pleased." (Mark 1:10-11) Now when all the people were baptized, and when Jesus also had been baptized and was praying, the heaven was opened, and the Holy Spirit descended upon him in bodily form like a dove. And a voice came from heaven, "You are my Son, the Beloved; with you I am well pleased." (Luke 3:21-22) |
Very truly, I tell you, unless a grain of wheat falls
into the earth and dies, it remains just a single
grain; but if it dies, it bears much fruit. Those who love their
life lose it, and those who hate their life in this world will
keep it for eternal life. (John 12:24-25) "Father, glorify your name." Then a voice came from heaven, "I have glorified it, and I will glorify it again." (John 12:28) |
Then Jesus was led up by the Spirit into the wilderness
to be tempted by the devil. He fasted forty days and forty nights,
and afterwards he was famished. (Matthew
4:1-2) Then the devil left him, and suddenly angels came and waited on him. (Matthew 4:11) And the Spirit immediately drove him out into the wilderness. He was in the wilderness forty days, tempted by Satan; and he was with the wild beasts; and the angels waited on him. (Mark 1:12-13) Jesus, full of the Holy Spirit, returned from the Jordan and was led by the Spirit in the wilderness, where for forty days he was tempted by the devil. He ate nothing at all during those days, and when they were over, he was famished. (Luke 4:1-2) For just as Jonah was three days and three nights in the belly of the sea monster, so for three days and three nights the Son of Man will be in the heart of the earth. (Matthew 12:40) |
Now my soul is troubled.
And what should I say--' Father, save me from this hour'? No, it
is for this reason that I have come to this hour. (John 12:27)
Then he said to them, "I am deeply grieved,
even to death; remain here, and stay awake with me."
And going a little farther, he threw himself on the
ground and prayed, "My Father, if it is possible,
let this cup pass from me; yet not what I want but what you want."
(Matthew 26:38-39)He took with him Peter and James and John, and began to be distressed and agitated. And said to them, "I am deeply grieved, even to death; remain here, and keep awake." And going a little farther, he threw himself on the ground and prayed that, if it were possible, the hour might pass from him. He said, "Abba, Father, for you all things are possible; remove this cup from me; yet, not what I want, but what you want." (Mark 14:33-36) Then he withdrew from them about a stone's throw, knelt down, and prayed, "Father, if you are willing, remove this cup from me; yet, not my will but yours be done." Then an angel from heaven appeared to him and gave him strength. In his anguish he prayed more earnestly, and his sweat became like great drops of blood falling down on the ground. (Luke 22:41-44) |
The next day he saw Jesus coming toward him and declared,
"Here is the Lamb of God who takes away
the sin of the world!" (John 1:29) The next day John again was standing with two of his disciples, and as he watched Jesus walk by, he exclaimed, "Look, here is the Lamb of God!" (John 1:35-36) |
A very large crowd spread their
cloaks on the road, and others cut branches from the trees and
spread them on the road. The crowds that went ahead of him and
that followed were shouting, "Hosanna to the Son of
David! Blessed is the one who comes in the name of the
Lord! Hosanna in the highest heaven!" When he entered
Jerusalem, the whole city was in turmoil, asking, "Who is
this?" The crowds were saying, "This is the prophet
Jesus from Nazareth in Galilee." (Matthew
21:8-11)
Then those who went ahead and
those who followed were shouting, "Hosanna! Blessed is the
one who comes in the name of the Lord! Blessed is the
coming kingdom of our ancestor David! Hosanna in the
highest heaven!" (Mark 11:9-10)
As he was now approaching the
path down from the Mount of Olives, the whole multitude of the
disciples began to praise God joyfully with a loud voice for all
the deeds of power that they had seen, saying, "Blessed is
the king who comes in the name of the Lord!
Peace in heaven, and glory in the highest heaven!" (Luke
19:37-38)
Jesus found a young donkey and sat on it; as it is written:
"Do not be afraid, daughter of Zion. Look, your
king is coming, sitting on a donkey's colt!"
(John 12:14-15) |
I'm not sure just how much significance
all these parallels have, but I have a hard time just believing they
are all coincidental. There are many, many things that knit Scripture
together that are often ignored because they do not meet the narrow
standards of popular academia or are simply overlooked, yet I believe
for all the honest in heart who are open to listening to the Spirit
there will be many things that will come together to provide clearer
views of the incredible mosaic of truth.
As we continue to share with each other
various aspects from we are finding and listen to what others are
also discovering, God will lead us to collectively increase in wisdom
and understanding and appreciation for the various gifts and
contributions that all of God's children have for the edification and
growth of His body.
